Set and fix social share preview images

SEOIntermediate~20 min

Before you start

A connected site with content reads on, media upload and set-featured-image enabled, and your SEO plugin's write ability on (Yoast, Rank Math, or All in One SEO). The agent uses whichever SEO plugin you have active.

You share a post on LinkedIn or in a group chat and the preview comes up blank, or worse, it grabs a random logo from the footer. The fix is the Open Graph image, the picture a platform is told to show when your link unfurls. Plenty of posts never got one, and setting them by hand means opening each post, finding art, uploading it, and saving the right field.

This walks the set for you, reads what is already there, and only writes the images you sign off on.

The prompt
I want the social share preview image set on [these posts, or the posts in the
"Guides" category]. I have [Rank Math] turned on.
First pass, read only: for each post, read its current SEO social image and its
featured image, and hand me a short table of what is set and what is missing.
Change nothing yet.
For the ones missing an image, I will give you the artwork to use, or point you
at an image already in the library. Only after I approve, upload any new image
to the media library, then set it as the post's social share image through the
SEO plugin, and set the featured image too where that is what feeds the
preview. Work in small batches and show me each batch before it saves. At the
end, list every post you touched. Nothing here edits the post body.

Why this is safe to run

The first pass is reads. Pulling each post’s current social image and featured image writes nothing, so you see the full gap as a table and decide which posts get which art before anything saves.

The write half is deliberately narrow. Uploading a new image adds it to the media library alongside your existing files; setting the social image writes only your SEO plugin’s own social field; setting the featured image writes only that. None of it edits the post body, and none of it publishes, unpublishes, or deletes anything. Every one of those write abilities stays off until you turn it on, each call is checked against the capability of the user you bound the agent to, and every upload and every field change lands in the Activity Log with the post it belongs to. The agent uses whichever SEO plugin you have active, so you are never asked to switch stacks.

Already connected? Skip the paste. Ask your agent for the “set social share preview images” recipe, or just point it at the posts with blank previews, and it runs the same read-then-approve flow on your own site.

How it works

  1. Read each post's current social image and featured image and show what is set or missing.
  2. Wait while you supply the artwork or point at an image already in the library.
  3. On approval, upload any new image to the media library.
  4. Set it as the post's social share image through your SEO plugin, and as the featured image where that feeds the preview.
  5. Work in small batches, pausing on each, and list every post it changed.

Questions

Which image does a shared link actually use?
It depends on the platform, but most read the Open Graph image your SEO plugin sets. Some setups fall back to the featured image, so the prompt sets both where that is what feeds the preview.
Does this touch the post content?
No. It writes the social image field through your SEO plugin and, optionally, the featured image. The post body is never edited.
