Bulk-noindex a set of categories in Rank Math

Before you start

A connected site running Rank Math, with content reads on and the term-meta write ability enabled. This recipe is Rank Math only, because Yoast and All in One SEO do not store term-level SEO in term meta.

Thin category archives are a common quiet drag on a site. A dozen tag-like categories with two posts each, an old “uncategorized” bucket, a handful of archives that only ever existed for a launch. Search engines crawl and index them anyway, and they compete with the pages you actually want ranking.

Taking them out of the index is a per-term flip, but doing it one category at a time in the Rank Math settings is exactly the kind of chore that gets abandoned halfway. This hands the reading and the flipping to the agent and keeps the picking with you.

The prompt
I want to noindex a set of [categories] on this site. I use [Rank Math].
First pass, read only: pull the terms in [the "category" taxonomy] and show me
the ones I name with their current search-engine setting, so I can confirm the
list before anything changes. Change nothing yet.
Once I approve the list, set each of those terms to noindex through its Rank
Math SEO meta, working in small batches and showing me each batch before it
saves. When you are done, list every term you changed so I can spot-check them.
If I want one back in the index later, it is a one-line flip of the same
setting.

Why this is safe to run

The first pass is all reads. Listing the taxonomy and showing each term’s current setting writes nothing, so you approve the exact list of categories before a single flip lands.

The write half only reaches Rank Math’s term SEO meta. It never edits a term’s name, slug, parent, or the posts filed under it, and it never deletes anything. The noindex flag is reversible by design, so a category you take out of the index today goes back in with the same setting tomorrow. On top of that, the term-meta write ability stays off until you enable it, every call is checked against the capability of the user you bound the agent to, and every write lands in the Activity Log with the term it changed. This is Rank Math only, and honestly so: Yoast and All in One SEO do not keep per-category SEO in term meta, so there is nothing here for the agent to reach on those plugins.

Already connected? You do not have to paste this at all. Ask your agent for the “bulk-noindex a set of categories” recipe, or just name the categories you want out of the index, and it runs the same read-then-approve flow on your own site.

How it works

  1. List the terms in the taxonomy you name and show the ones you picked.
  2. Confirm the current search-engine setting on each before touching anything.
  3. Wait for your approval on the exact list.
  4. Write the noindex flag to each term through Rank Math's SEO meta, in small batches, pausing on each batch.
  5. Return every term it changed so you can spot-check them.

Questions

Does this work with Yoast or All in One SEO?
No. Only Rank Math keeps term-level SEO settings in term meta, which is what this reaches. Yoast and All in One SEO do not expose a per-category noindex the same way, so this recipe is Rank Math only.
Can I put a category back in the index later?
Yes. It is the same setting flipped the other way. Ask the agent to set those terms back to index and it reverses cleanly.
